How To Prevent Mold In Your Garage

The garage is an ideal location for mold growth. Mold requires excess moisture and organic material. Flooding, standing water, rain, leaks in roofs, and damaged pipes all contribute to the garage having excess moisture. Wood, paper, cardboard, ceiling tiles and fabrics in the garage provide the organic material mold needs to thrive on.
Many websites will often recommend that you use Chlorine bleach to tackle the mold, but this can result in more mold growth. The mold will penetrate the pores of the material where the chlorine bleach cannot reach. The chlorine will then evaporate away and leave moisture behind, which will then help the mold grow more.

Instead of tackling the mold, we need to tackle the moisture. To prevent standing water, rainwater, and flood water from entering the garage, you should install a garage door threshold seal. This will create a watertight barrier underneath the door and prevent excess moisture from entering.

Condensation is the second biggest damp problem that contributes to mold. This can be prevented by improving the air circulation by installing an air conditioning unit, or ventilation system. Maintaining a constant temperature that is above the dew point will also help prevent condensation. Therefore, insulating the garage door (walls and ceiling as well) will help maintain the temperature and prevent condensation.

If you invest in a quality weather seal, AC system and insulation, you can save yourself a small fortune in mold remediation costs.
